Hon. Eugene Hamilton

As the Minister with responsibility for Housing and Human Settlement, I am charged by His Excellency with the oversight responsibility for the National Housing Corporation (NHC) established 20 years ago in 1996 with the passage by the National Assembly of the National Housing Corporation Act, Act 9 of 1996 that came into force on 1st September, 1996 and is now recorded as Chapter 23.18 in the 2009 Revised Laws of St Christopher and Nevis.

The NHC Act established the NHC for the purpose of adding to and improving the existing supply of residential housing and to encourage and promote greater efficiency in the housing sector.

The Board of Directors is vested by legislation with the power to manage the affairs of the NHC and is responsible for the policy and the general administration of the NHC. I would like to thank the past and present members of the Board of Directors; staff members who have kept the Corporation functioning as envisaged by Parliament to meet the needs of the infirmed and the indigent in our communities here on St. Kitts.

We at the Ministry consider the NHC to be in the business of allocating homes, and nurturing communities where love, respect, and a sense of belonging can flourish and grow in a green and safe environment.

Through their hard work the Board of Directors, the management and staff of the NHC were able in April 2016 to deliver to eighty-three (83) families’ affordable living accommodation. The team at the NHC is currently planning on providing an additional 300 affordable housing at various locations throughout St Kitts over the next twenty-four (24) months. Financing has been sought for the construction of these homes and construction is to commence at the earliest in 2017.

I would encourage persons who desire the assistance of the NHC to visit the corporation and complete the requisite application forms so that they can be considered for approval.

The future looks bright; let’s go make a difference in the lives of our people by “Raising Standards”.
